The crime
Thirty hours. Three days. Six subjects. Target: forty out of fifty on a makeup exam for Advanced Numerical Methods. I did not attend most of the lectures. I did not complete most of the assigned homework. I did not open the recommended textbook until seventy-two hours before the examination.
The students who attended every lecture, completed every assignment, and participated in every tutorial scored lower than I did.
This is not a flex. This is a confession of grand larceny committed against an educational institution and the institution thanked me for it.
Card counting with a degree on the line
Two hundred problems exist in the course’s problem pool. The instructors draw exam questions exclusively from this pool. One hundred forty have appeared in previous exams. Sixty have not.
I mapped every unused problem against the sample paper and the three previous final exams. The pattern emerged immediately. The examiners rotate through the unused pool. Ninety percent of the exam would come from the sixty problems nobody had asked before. This is not studying. This is card counting at a blackjack table where the payout is a university degree and the house has not noticed you are tracking the deck.
The examiners are predictable mammals running a finite curriculum. They cannot invent new problems because inventing new problems takes more time than recycling old ones. The pool is fixed. The counting is trivial. The only variable is whether the student is willing to treat an exam preparation like a reconnaissance operation instead of an educational exercise.
The schedule
Day one: partial differential equation formation, non-linear type classification, coordinate transformations. Ten hours.
Day two: wave equation derivation, heat equation derivation, separation of variables. Ten hours.
Day three: finite difference methods, calculus of variations, final paper. Ten hours.
Each problem solved pen on paper from a blank page without consulting the solution key. Peeking at the solution and nodding does not count. Reading the solution and concluding “I understand this” does not count. Understanding is not execution. Execution is writing the answer from nothing while a clock runs. Nothing else counts. The exam does not test understanding. The exam tests execution under time pressure.
The predictions
I predicted exam questions from the previous paper patterns the way a bookie predicts match outcomes from historical statistics.
PDE formation: 100 percent confidence. Arrived exactly as predicted. Non-linear types: 85 percent. Appeared with a surface-level variant requiring an additional fifteen minutes. Lagrange: 75 percent. Showed up. Heat derivation: 90 percent. Wave Fourier: 90 percent. Laplace FDM: 80 percent.
The predictions were not based on understanding the material. They were based on understanding the examiners. The examiners are primates with habits. They favor certain problem structures. They avoid certain derivations. They have preferences they do not realize are visible. Understanding the examiner is more valuable than understanding the subject matter and I say this as someone who has read more source code than any twenty year old should have.
The hangover
I scored forty out of fifty. I do not remember any of the material.
The knowledge evaporated approximately fifteen minutes after I exited the examination hall, like a program that unloads its working memory the instant the process terminates. The transcript shows a number. The transcript does not show that the number was manufactured in three days. The transcript does not show that the question distribution was reverse-engineered from historical patterns. The transcript does not show that the entire exercise was a pattern-matching operation that treated the university’s assessment system like a slot machine with a published payout table.
The system does not reward understanding. The system rewards whoever understands the system. I understood the system. I received my number. The number is a credential. The credential is what the market values. The market does not value knowledge. The market values the number that certifies the knowledge was once present, even if the knowledge departed immediately afterward.
Thirty hours. Six subjects. Three days. Zero retained material. One number on a transcript that says I know something I do not know. The degree is the point. The knowledge was never the point. The knowledge was a temporary variable that was freed the moment the function returned.
